Pearl September 2025 Litter!
"Pearl" x "Merlin"
A New Adventure! Read Below!
We're always growing and learning around here! Recently I began speaking with a fellow veterinary technician who also raises, shows and breeds poodles. She introduced me to what's called 'inter-variety breeding' and I was immediately intrigued. For those of you who don't know, the Poodle is the only breed of dog that has 3 different varieties (Toy, Miniature & Standard) with the only aspect differentiating them is size. A toy poodle has the exact same conformation, build and structure requirements as a Standard poodle or a Mini, the only thing that makes them a different variety is size.
According to the AKC the 'Toy' variety of poodle can be no more than 10" tall at the shoulders and weigh no more than 4-6lbs. A 'Miniature' variety poodle can be no more than 10-15" tall at the shoulder and weigh no more than 10-15lbs.
Any poodle over 15" tall at the shoulder is considered the Standard variety. Females should weigh 40-50lbs and males should weigh 60-70lbs. Breeding any variety of poodle together is still 100% purebred poodle, it is only the variety that will be determined once they reach maturity. A Toy, Mini and Standard poodle could all come out of the same litter if the genetics are diverse enough, it would be very rare though because both parents are usually close in size...enter the concept of inter-variety breeding!
There are many ideas and benefits behind this type of breeding. You are broadening the genetic spectrum of a line or pedigree by entering a completely different variety line. This decreases the chances of inbreeding in a pedigree drastically. By decreasing that, you increase the health potential of each puppy. There is also the benefit of size. Some people don't want a small poodle like a toy or mini but also don't want a poodle with the potential to get very tall and weigh upwards of 70lbs. Some people prefer a Standard Poodle that is on the smaller end of spectrum. That's my goal with this litter. I am embracing inter-variety breeding and pairing my Pearl (17" tall and 60lbs) to a Miniature Poodle male who is 12" tall and 12lbs. Although there are no guarantees, the most likely result of this pairing will be poodles that average 30-40lbs, so in essence 'small standards' also kown as 'Moyen' or 'Klein' poodles.
Families love this size for so many reasons: They are easier to carry, transport, play with children, smaller dogs etc.
So that's what we're doing!
